The HK416 from Heckler & Koch, with its infamy and legendary status, is still an attractive AR design. How far does its effectiveness go beyond the other ARs is up to the operator, but for now, it can go unattested its tapered looks, ergonomic beauty, and design modularity will allow it a place in the hearts of many firearm-lovers.

It’s just an AR with a piston action shoved inside of it. If you are looking for unbridled perfection in gun form, you forgot about the AR-180 and it’s perfect single stage trigger.
As much as I’m super down to side-eye bolted on piston systems for the AR platform, I think the 416 design is genuinely clever and robust.
It’s just as robust as any AR-15. The problem I have with it is they kept the most egregious part of the AR-15; the T- handle. So, in essence, it’s no more ergonomic than an AR-15 but with the added benefit of having a short stroke piston jammed into the action. If I wanted a piston 5.56 rifle; I’d buy the aformentioned AR-18/180. There’s a reason that Eugene stoner designed it; to improve upon the pre existing AR-15. Which he did; It has a side charging handle, a more ergonomic mag release, and no buffer tube. Not to mention the lighter construction.
The HK 416 system is more robust than other short-stroke piston systems adapted to the AR platform, probably including long-stroke systems like PWS rifles. They’re not necessarily more robust than classic DI systems, but T-style charging handle is clearly weak point per the manual of arms of both.
You won’t get any argument from me about the AR-18/0, it’s probably one of the best and most under-appreciated small arms operating systems ever developed. The switch to stamped steel receivers while maintaining magazine compatibility with he AR-15 platform was a good choice, too.
However the charging handle isn’t built into the bolt carrier on the AR-18 either, and it’s on the right, so for practical purposes I’m not sure the manual of arms much better than the AR-15. Using a T-handle requires the shooter move their head away from the stock (and off the sights), but the right-side charging requires righties to either reach over the rifle (blocking the sights and probably canting it to the left) or move their hand from the pistol grip.
This probably deserves its own post! But for whatever reason I can’t seem to find a good picture of the entire AR-18/0 piston system and I’m high as fuck on decongestants. Lots of Leader T2/MPAR-556 pictures, though!
I’ll post a few later of the action. Additionally, you can release the bho on the 18/0 with your hand on the pistol grip provided you have gorilla hands.
